How video streaming can ruin VoIP and gaming

I’ve spent much time debunking the notion that all applications should be treated equally by the network. I’ve also published data showing the harmful effects of BitTorrent which was supposedly “network friendly”, but I haven’t talked about the harmful effects of video streaming from popular services like Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu up until now.

YouTube, Inc has qualified for the safe-harbor protections of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). This has occurred even in light of the fact that it was stated in court that YouTube founders, “not only were generally aware of, but welcomed” piracy.

Research: FCC’s “Third Way”

Progress & Freedom Foundation comments on the announcement of the Federal Communications Commissions vote to move forward with a Notice of Inquiry to regulate the Internet under “Title II” classification. This move to reclassify under Title II would define Internet provision as a telecommunications service.

They believe that privacy and security is especially important because of the innovation and economic growth that the Internet has provided. Research: Broadband Reclassification Credibility

Authors Ford and Spiwak review the new issues created that put the Federal Communications Commissions legal authority to regulate the Internet into question after the Comcast v. FCC case. The FCC will move forward with what they have called a “Third Way” in which broadband would be reclassified in order to gain some authority in what has been referred to as “Title II Lite”.

They believe that the Internet can be seen as a “general-purpose” technology but that it can also play an important role in: 1) The reduction of transaction costs; 2) A forum for increased political discourse; 3) Provide for educational opportunities; and, 4) Promote social change.
