NARUC Resolution on Net Neutrality

By urging a move from non-discrimination to unreasonable discrimination, NARUC recognizes that “big dumb pipes” are a model for the Internet that was abandoned years ago. NARUC also realizes you cannot have a neutral internet if only one side of the content/access equation has to abide by those rules.

Parsing Obama’s Net Neutrality Statement

Telecom and tech bloggers were abuzz yesterday as Obama’s response to a question about net neutrality made it’s way through the ether. (video is embedded after the jump) The question, asked as part of the YouTube interview with the President, may have generated more controversy than intended.

Free Press Fights FCC Ambiguity… With More Ambiguity

Free Press spent a lot of words in their NPRM filing to argue that the FCC’s definition of reasonable network management practices was unreasonable. One of their kinder passages states:
The Commission’s proposed definition is circular, ambiguous, and incomplete, and without further definition will create loopholes and result in future errors in policymaking.
So what does Free Press propose to use in its place? From a blog post on their site (ironically titled “Clear Standards for Reasonable Network Management“), they have come up with wording that is rock solid and could not …

Is the FCC Going After Content Regulation?

Upon venturing to the FCC’s new Future of Media site you will be of course welcomed to the future. It seems lately that the FCC has been welcoming us all to the “future” in a lot of areas. Which generally means that FCC fingers and venturing into areas we are not used to seeing them.

4.8 Billion Taxpayer Dollars Are Going To Do What?

Late last week, the National Telecommunications & Information Association and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service announced the rules for doling out the second round of broadband stimulus funding – totaling $4.8 billion. The Notices of Funds Availability (NoFA) contain significantly different rules from the first round funding restrictions.
As many trade publications have noted, the new NoFAs make it much easier to qualify for funding. However, while the agencies argue that the new rules make it easier to target specific priority areas, the more likely scenario will see …

“Gamers for Lag” Weighs In On Net Neutrality

The gaming community should be distressed at the ECA selling them out. If ECA is going to continue to argue for policies that harm gamers, perhaps they should change their name to “Gamers for Lag” and be upfront about the impact of their position.

Digital Society’s FCC Net Neutrality Comments

This past Friday, Digital Society submitted three separate comments for the FCC’s Comments Period session on its Network Neutrality NPRM. These comments can be found through the FCC’s filing system and are open to the public. But in the interest of full transparency and ease of finding them we wanted to also post them here.

From the “They Really Said It” File

One of the best parts of my job is I get to skim through countless blog posts about all sorts of telecom topics and see what people are thinking. But occasionally I stumble upon a post so truly hysterical that I smile for a week. This is one of those days. Apparently, the Future of Music Coalition is organizing musicians to file comments on the FCC’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on net neutrality. Acts are pouring out of the “Where Are They Now” file in droves just to …

FCC in the Sunshine

In early December Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI) introduced the ‘Federal Communications Commision Collaboration Act’ (H.R. 4167). You can read the text of the Act in its entirety here. Essentially the Act is purposed for the increase of face to face time among commisioners, and would allow more than two commissioners to meet at any one time.

Berkman Center to FCC: Forced Access

“Measure twice, cut once” is good advice. The Berkman Center wants the FCC to eyeball it and start cutting.
