Black Ops Shows Digital Entertainment Still Ticking In Rough Economy

Reuters reported this afternoon that Call of Duty: Black Ops set a first-day sales record of 5.6 million copies of the game sold for roughly $360 million in first day sales.

The secure anonymous hotspot I proposed in 2007

Sophos security’s Chester Wisniewski offered a “solution” for securing Hotspots, but it isn’t secure because it uses WPA-PSK. Anyone can sniff the initial connection and derive the unique session key which makes the solution insecure. I proposed a more secure solution for a secure anonymous hotspot back in 2007.

Chevy Volt to be more expensive in electric mode than gas

Edmonds reports that the Chevy Volt could cost more to drive using electricity than gasoline depending on the electric rate. Edmonds paid an average of $0.31 per KWH of electricity and $3.31 for 91 octane gasoline. Edmonds computed that $0.24 per KWH of electricity would have been parity with 91 octane gasoline, but they paid substantially more for electric fuel.

Microsoft ‘fixes’ Hotmail with an unusable fix

Microsoft technically “fixed” their sidejacking vulnerability by giving Hotmail users the option of manually enabling SSL. The problem is that most users won’t know to do this and even if they do, they’ll be forced to break Outlook Connector, Live Mail, and Windows Mobile Hotmail connectivity.

BlackSheep detects IP address of amateur sidejackers

BlackSheep is a very clever tool for detecting amateur Wi-Fi hackers using FireSheep, but it won’t find serious Wi-Fi hackers and it distracts from the underlying problem of weak online security and nonexistent Wi-Fi Hotspot security.

Research: Violent Video Games at the Supreme Court

Transcripts from Schwarzenegger v. EMA are now available. The case examines a California law passed in 2005 that lays down steep fines on companies that sell “violent video games” to minors. “Violent video games” are defined by the law as games that meet the “Miller three prong test”.
