CDT files comments with the Department of Commerce concerned with the state of privacy on the Internet.  They believe that privacy and security is especially important because of the innovation and economic growth that the Internet has provided.  CDT believes that the DOC can provide a “comprehensive privacy framework” for the United States.

CDT considers 9 points in improving privacy and security on the Internet:

  1. U.S. Privacy Framework Going Forward
  2. U.S. State Privacy Laws
  3. International Privacy Law and Regulations
  4. Jurisdictional Conflicts and Competing Legal Obligations
  5. Sectoral Privacy Laws and Federal Guidelines
  6. New Privacy-Enhancing Technologies and Information Management Processes
  7. Small and Medium-Sized Entities and Startup Companies
  8. Government Access to Electronic Communications Data
  9. Role for Government/Commerce Department
