ABI Research takes a look at worldwide wireless deployment and has projected that the next several years will be very big for the roll out of these technologies.

Currently 480 million people are currently covered by the 802.16e WiMAX standard, and ABI expects this to cross the 1 billion mark by 2012.  2012 is expected to be a big year for LTE as well with an anticipated 600 million covered by quarter four.

ABI believes that there could be 150 million subscriptions to a 4G service by the end of 2014.  But this will also depend on contractual agreements, upgrades in technologies, and commitments to carriers.

The research group feels that most mobile carriers will move toward LTE technology, but that a group like Clearwire owns the spectrum to operate on either LTE or WiMAX.
