Securing Online Video: Three Market Approaches
The Diffusion Group
Colin Dixon and Steve Symonds

Dixon and Symonds analyze security concerns in online television delivery. They argue that it differs from cable or satellite delivery because choosing the wrong method online could leave content open to piracy.

In the traditional delivery method, the authors argue that content transferred from the creator to the services operator is sent via secure transmission and then finally distributed to the end user through a closed-loop, secure network. On the Internet, TV delivery is at a security disadvantage. There are vulnerabilities at the originating Web site, transmission networks, content delivery networks, personal computers and wireless home networks.

Dixon and Symonds use this chart to show the major differences between the pay and Internet TV environments:

They discuss the two primary security methods for streaming video content — content-based and pipe-based security. Additionally, they provide examples of three key players — Microsoft, Move Networks and Adobe — to explain implementation of security strategies online.
