Julius Knapp is absolutely right, there are applications that need to be given priority just to have an equal chance at success, but the NPRM as it presently stands prohibits this kind of prioritization and good network management.

Cisco’s “Sim City”: Internet Infrastructure Edition

Cisco has recently entered the video game market…sort of. myPlanNet can be found at the link. The game is a Sim City type RTS (real-time strategy) simulation game that places you at the center of the early 1990′s when public knowledge of the Internet is extremely limited.

Americans are subsidizing $16,834 phone lines

While USF telephone service taxes rise from 13% to 14%, some small phone companies are being turned into millionaires because the USF will pay them $16,834 a month per phone line.

Wired and Infoworld is reporting that Verizon is somehow blocking Exchange access on the Motorola Droid unless subscribers pay an extra $15 for Exchange access and it has some people up in arms.  PC Magazine did some fact checking and debunked this conspiracy theory.  This is yet another Net Neutrality false alarm.

FCC NPRM prohibits good network management

The FCC NPRM regulations on broadband providers in its current state will prohibit all forms of discrimination even if they are justifiable. As a result, applications like VoIP or online gaming will needlessly suffer because of over prescriptive regulation.

Analysis of BitTorrent uTP congestion avoidance

BitTorrent’s new uTP protocol claims to be “network friendly”, but testing suggests that it’s just as nasty to web surfing, online gaming, and VoIP as before. BitTorrent still consumes 90% of the network and causes very high jitter.
