“Blue Bell” Dubbed Dems Address FCC

By Nick R Brown 16 October 2009 No Comment

The Wall Street Journal is reporting this afternoon that a growing number of Democrats have asked the FCC to back off on its Net Neutrality push.  Earlier in the week the FCC had received mail from 11 governors across party lines, 18 Republican Senators, and the House minority leadership.

This was topped off today with a letter co-authored and signed by 72 Democrats from the House of Representatives.  10 of which are members of the House Energy & Commerce Committee that holds sway over the FCC.

Neutralians have nic named the group of 72 “Blue Bell” Democrats.  Obviously a reference to former Bell telecommunications companies paralleled with the catchiness of the “Blue Dog” Democrat moniker.  The insinuation of course being that private sector communications lobbyists have been making their rounds this week.

There is certainly the chance that this is legitimate, but there is also the possibility that this is simply a power move.  Congressional Democrats and Republicans have both either authored or co-authored current or former bills regarding Net Neutrality.  It could be the case that the position statement being made is “that if anything is done on this issue, we’ll be the ones to do it.”
