Cheap 720P webcam will popularize HD video conferencing

By George Ou 28 September 2009 One Comment

Microsoft just launched their new Cinema HD Webcam for $80 list price. The camera supports 1280×720 resolution at 30 fps which is higher than the 960×720 resolution of the dominant Logitech 9000 Pro. With a 720P camera this cheap and the existence of 720P video conferencing software, we can hope for the popularization of personal HD video conferencing. The bandwidth requirement for 720P video conferencing is at least 1.3 Mbps upstream and downstream though higher bandwidth always results in better quality.

Here’s the promotional video of the camera.
